11. The Second Exodus

On their way back from the prison, Abramino, with a face clenched like his fist on the wheel, murmured in a defeated voice which Inbar hardly recognized,

“There’s no way out now, no way out, we’ll have to leave….”

Raoul, I’m coming! dashed through Inbar’s mind like a rapid beam of sunshine on a grey horizon.

“And the quicker the better,” her father added.

Inbar nodded her approval vigorously.

The meeting of a smaller Maccabee group took place in Jacqueline’s home, a beautiful, spacious villa on the banks of the Nile. Some of the haverim had already left Egypt, and there were only eighteen of the original thirty that remained. Inbar noticed one young man she did not know.

“When is Gaby flying to Paris?” Shmuel asked, while opening the door for Inbar.

“He flew early this morning,” she said sadly. “We weren’t allowed to escort him to the airport.”

“And Raoul? Heard any news from him?”

“Not yet,” she said. The words stuck in her throat painfully, like prickly pears.

“Don’t worry, we’ll probably all soon be with him,” Shmuel said hastily, before they joined the haverim.

There was anticipation and tension in the Kahanof’s spacious and comfortable drawing room. A large, luxurious dahabeya – barge – on the Nile, could be seen from the window. Shmuel started his talk, and everybody listened in awe and excitement. Things were happening fast, and their heavy presence was felt ominously in the very air of the room.

“As you know, haverim,” Shmuel opened, in a serious, deep voice, “the Second Exodus has started. Many of our haverim and their families have already left. It seems that our people, who have been in Egypt for more than two thousand years, have to say “Goodbye to the Nile” and wander again. Some are being forced out, and some are leaving because they are afraid. And they are forced to leave all their property and assets behind! The wheel is turning, and we have to come to conclusions. Clara is going to give us a short talk today, and then I have a surprise for you.”

Clara cleared her throat and started. “With the establishment of the State of Israel on May 15, last week, the Jews are now considered enemies in the eyes of the Egyptian authorities, though it was clear to them all along that our national aspirations-not being nurtured by Egypt-were turned towards Zion. Not only did they know and accept that, but even encouraged this trend by not granting us the Egyptian citizenship, as Inbar so well explained in her lecture recently. The growing enmity, unfortunately, has been turned not only towards Zionists, but also towards people who have never associated thenselves with Zionism. As we know, not only Zionist youths have been seized and sent to Huckstep in Heliopolis, and El Tor in the Sinai Desert, and various other concentration and deportation camps, but also several venerated rabbis and leaders of the community. Some have been tortured when they refused to chant: Jews are the dogs of the Arabs.
